چکیده

The OCP, which is exhibited at various levels of the phonological representation (e.g. featural, melodic, and tonal), has been extensively discussed in numerous studies (Leben 1973, 1978, 1980; McCarthy 1979, 1986; Archangeli 1986; Odden 1986, 1988, 1994; Archangeli & Pulleyblank 1987; Hyman 1987; Kenstowicz & Kidda 1987; Myers 1987, 1997ab; Yip 1988; Hewitt & Prince 1989; Myers & Carleton 1996, Alderete 1997; Itô & Mester 1996ab, 1998, and Keer 1999). These studies have introduced and analyzed patterns obeying the OCP in various languages, and also discussed the internal nature of the phenomenon, as well as offered tools for deriving the OCP effects in different theoretical frameworks.

Phonetic markedness, turning points, and anticipatory attention

Phonetic markedness regarding linguistically relevant tonal patterns (Accent 2, boundary tones) in Central Swedish is discussed. Both tonal markedness and F0 turning points are assumed to be important cues for anticipatory attention to grammatical structure during speech processing. Empirical evidence from neurolinguistic and psycholinguistic experiments for the assumed relation between anticip...

Phonological features in the bilingual lexicon: Insights from tonal accent in Swedish

Scandinavian languages like Swedish employ tonal accent as a lexical phonological feature, where suprasegmental information can be the sole factor differentiating between words. Using cross-modal semantic fragment priming we tested the following: (a) Do monolingual speakers of Swedish use tonal accent information during lexical access? (b) Do bilingual speakers, who grew up with one tonal (Swed...

The relative perceptual weight of two Swedish prosodic contrasts

In addition to 9 vowel and 18 consonant phonemes, Swedish has three prosodic phonemic contrasts: word stress, quantity and tonal word accent. There are also examples of distinctive phrase or sentence stress, where a verb can be followed by either an unstressed preposition or a stressed particle. This study focuses on word level and more specifically on word stress and tonal word accent in disyl...

Asymmetric processing of lexical tonal contrast in Swedish.

Languages such as Swedish use suprasegmental information such as tone, over and above segments, to mark lexical contrast. Theories differ with respect to the abstractness and specification of tone in the mental lexicon. In a forced choice task, we tested Swedish listeners' responses to words with segmentally identical first syllables differing in tonal contours (characterized as Accents 1 and 2...

An Intonational Typology of Swedish
